Feminist Thought: A More Comprehensive Introduction
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (March, 1998)
Author: Rosemarie Putnam Tong
Average review score:

Comprehensive
It is often hard to recommend books for first-timers. I have no compunction recommending this one to anyone taking their first stept into the complex world of feminism. As an introduction, its most valuable contribution lies in the intelligent manner almost all major thinkers were presented. The bibliography is also indispensible.

Excellent intro to the many feminisms
This is the best source I've seen which defines the various feminisms (e.g. liberal, marxist, existentialist...) Tong describes the assumptions of each position and then presents supportive and opposing views. Her approach encourages the reader to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each position. Very balanced presentation with plenty of illustrative examples.

Green Grow the Dollars

Author: Emma Lathen

Business is murder
This clever series where the motive is always money has abanker who naturally can put his finer on the clues. This one is great outing with rival researchers claiming the rights to a break- through tomato--one that can stand up to travel ans still taste like somethin--wouldn't that be great. Mixing the profit motive and academic pride proves to be a deadly combination. Violence in the greenhouses and among the footnotes. A fast paced mystery with an orginal and credible plot.

Nice and tence
A good mystery-boo

How to Draw Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron and Friends
Published in Paperback by Firebird Books (April, 2002)
Authors: Lawrence Hamashima, Dreamworks Pictures, and Penguin Putnam
Average review score:

A very great book!
You can't buy the book "How to draw Spirit and Friends" in Germany, but you can order it! I'm come from Germany and I've order this book! I hope, it is a great book. You sad it's great and the booktitle sounds very good!

Super Spirit
This is one of the most greatest spirit produts, It has step by step drawing tips on how to draw spirit and Friends.

Excellent drawing guide for "Spirit" fans
The title of the booklet "How To Draw Spirit And Friends" is somewhat self-explanatory. Fans of the movie "Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron" will have hours of fun looking at and trying to copy the excellent illustrations of DreamWorks artist Lawrence Hamashima. The drawing tips are interesting not only for children, but for everyone who wants to learn more about the artwork of animation drawing as well as horse anatomy.

At the beginning, general tips for drawing are given, while extra tip boxes appear on the following pages, pointing out interesting drawing facts the reader might not have noticed otherwise. Step by step it's explained how to draw Spirit as a colt, Spirit, the eagle, Rain, Spirit running, Esperanza, and Little Creek. Each chapter is preceded by a short introduction telling about the western frontier and horses.

Except for a removable full-color poster, the booklet is in old-fashioned sepia colors, thus adding to the Old West-style. The result is a highly recommendable drawing guide for fans of the movie interested in the brilliant artwork of "Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron."

Last Flight
Published in Paperback by Orion Books Ltd (May, 1988)
Authors: Amelia Earhart, George P. Putnam, and Walter J. Boyne
Average review score:

reality
In all of the guessing and all of the opinions about AE, her goals and her loss, I'm thankful the this pilot was a fine writer so we can see how she felt things developed. As a writer with some experience in aviation history as applied to women, I realize both the process her actual words went through to get on the page and the fact that her husband had a great deal of impact on the outcome of her last book. Still, "Last Flight" is in keeping with material published before her death, when she did have more control over the process. "Last Flight" gives each one of us the opportunity to make our own decision about her life and her end.

Far out
Man, this book rocked out. Like, Amelia Earhart was da bomb. Man, when she died, that was like, so bush. You know, I bet she's still alive somewhere, man. Like on some pacific island somewhere just chillin with the natives, sippin on a drink, yeah boy! She be bumpin' with some hot guy. Yeah.

Mig Aircraft Since 1937 (Putnam Aviation Series)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (July, 1998)
Authors: Bill Gunston and Yefim Gordon
Average review score:

Exhaustively researched
The opportunity of unprecedented access to former URSS archives has produced the best book on the history of the MiG bureau. All designs created by the fertile genius of Artyon I. Mikoyan and Mikhail I. Gurevich are thoroughly presented with many historical details of their initial development. Even if the book covers all aircrafts and missiles, the thickest part of the work is dedicated to jet models, prototypes and experimental planes built after the II WW. In this respect, the volume is very exhaustive because it fixes many obscured points about production variants and aircraft designations, giving a clear picture of design evolution, previously blurred in the West for the impossibility of approaching directly sources of informations or files (there was a cold war, intelligence denial was a serious matter, do you remember?). Many photographs and drawings are published, some of them for the first time.

In the end, this is the most comprehensive book on MiG bureau, in line with Bill Gunston's style, whose dedication to excellency we all know about, even if the treatise on II World War projects is not so extensive. Highly recommended for Soviet aviation buffs.

Another fine volume in the Putnam Aviation series.
This book is classic Putnam Aviation all the way. Detailed coverage of all production MIG aircraft through the MIG-29 series and many prototypes, with very detailed technical information. Addtional appendices cover weapons and engines. More technical than Belyakov and Marmain's MIG Fifty Years of Secret Aircraft Design, Gunston and Gordon's book is not as readable but far more detailed. Interstingly, the two books differ in a number of details, most notably in regards to Soviet aircraft world records.

I recommend this book to all fans of the Putnam series and to anyone interested in SOviet aviation and the Cold War.

Pick Up Sticks (An Inner Sanctum Mystery)
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (June, 1970)
Author: Emma Lathen
Average review score:

Poor Thatcher, he can't even get a vacation from murder!
We've already had a good synopsis of the book. Let me just say that I love John Putnam Thatcher. I wish Lathen's books were more available. I thought this one was really good. Thatcher gets away from his desk and off on the hiking trail, but his hiking companion finds a dead body. Thatcher gets drawn into the investigation. The dead man was also an avid hiker, but it's his complex relationship with his wife and ex-wife that had everyone thinking. Great book. I found it at the library, so if you can't get a copy elsewhere, try it there.

Storyline ....
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Imagine the urbane John Putnam Thatcher, senior vice president of Sloan Guaranty Trust, striding down the Appalacian Trail in boots and breeches, loaded with backpack and dehyrated rations, accompanied by an old Down East crony, Henry Morland. Imagine the odds of their finding, along that 2,000 mile trail, one Steven Lester laid to rest (albeit wtih a hammer) in a picturesque housing development with the wildly inappropriate name of Fiord Haven. Consider the improbability of Thatcher and Morland -- both men of great martial experience -- trangling with Steven Lester's two wives, Amanda and Eunice, either of whom had reason to profit as a widow and both of whom intend to. In the midst of the hectic milieu of hig-pressure salesmanship and murder, their cat fights add a special poignancy to the genveral discord and bolster the notion that either of them could have done in Steven Lester ..."

Reference and Essence
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (November, 1981)
Author: Nathan U. Salmon
Average review score:

Breathtaking Analytic Philosophy!
This book is undeservedly out of print. What Mozart is to the symphony, Salmon is to direct reference theory. Clearly one of the most rigorous and thorough texts in analytic philosophy of language of the latter twentieth century, written by one of the finest minds who ever graced either the UCLA or Princeton campus. UCSB is lucky to have him. And I understand that the original manuscript was styled in quite legible handwriting (not to mention correct logical notation).

This text is essential reading for anyone interested in the philosophy of language (even Quine said so!), and it is a superb defense of what has been called "The Theory of Direct Reference." It is a clear exposition and analysis of the specifics pertinent to the theory, especially helpful is Section 3 in Ch 1 on Rigid Designation. And you thought 'obstinacy' was peculiar to feminism!

The first 150 pages of this book reads like the first 150 pages of Joyce's Ulysses--what a masterpiece! However, I must say that I think the formalizations in Part Four (on Putnam's Theory) are a bit showy.

If ever you require a text that discusses the fundamentals of Donnellan's Elucidations on (T9) or "The General K-Mechanism and the I-Mechanism," then this is the book for you.

Lastly, Salmon's book clearly discusses Putnam's Paradox. Very sexy. But I daresay that Michael Fletcher's MA thesis (CSULB) is also a good place to start for that particular discussion (although it's a bit descriptive, requiring more formalizations of the significant arguments).

This text is required reading, continuous with Naming and Necessity, and Kalish, Montague, and Marr: Formal Logic.

Enjoy. And now try to find yourself a copy. Good luck.

Excellent text for learning cutting edge phil. of lang.
This text can jump start one's study of the most advanced topics in the philosophy of language in the analytic tradition. Traditional theories of reference are contrasted with the new direct theory of reference. It is argued that the direct theory (the causal theory of reference) does not really support belief in essences.

Wee Sing Dinosaurs
Published in Paperback by Price Stern Sloan Pub (August, 2002)
Authors: Pamela Conn Beall and Penguin Putnam
Average review score:

Lots of fun for a dino lover
We bought this tape for my dino-loving son. It's lots of fun to listen to in the car. Has songs about most breeds of dinosaurs including his favorites - deinonychus (with his terrible claw) and pteradactyl. I even enjoy it (after the 1,000 playing)

An all-time favorite of my 2.5 year old
This is the 2nd copy of this that we'll own since we wore out the first one from playing it so often. My son (age 2.5) won't sit in the car unless he can hear his "dinosaur songs." And he's learned a lot about dinosaurs and other things while he listens to it.

When in Greece
Published in Textbook Binding by G K Hall & Co (June, 1972)
Author: Emma Lathen
Average review score:

FANTASTIC! One of the few mysteries I read over and over
I'm a huge fan of Emma Lathen, and this is probably my favorite book of all. Like all of her books, it is very witty (in some places, downright hilarious), and thoroughly enjoyable. The series features Wall Street bank executive John Putnam Thatcher and his colleagues -- and Wall Street banking was never that interesting when I worked there. Although I usually give away mysteries after reading them, this is one of only two series I keep and reread. I never tire of them.

John Putnam Thatcher is a winner
Emma Lathen has produced a wonderful lead character in John Putnam Thatcher. Although often swept into areas far outside his field of expertise, he brings his incisive mind to problems of all types. Mr. Thatcher, along with his many friends and associates, always follow the money - and the killer. Highly recommended if you enjoy a tightly crafted mystery.
